Direct sales or a pyramid scheme?

Anything resembling a pyramid scheme freaks people out and rightfully so - pyramid schemes are illegal and unethical. Too often, direct sales and “Pyramid schemes” get lumped into the same conversation but there are important distinctions between the two.

Fraudulent pyramid schemes — like Ponzi schemes — are illegal but often try to disguise themselves as multi-level marketing (MLM) programs or direct sales. Traditional MLM programs are legal because there is a real product that is being sold through the channel.
